Distribution Control Tower Blueprint
Purpose
The Distribution Control Tower provides a unified operational view of outbound distribution activities — warehouse operations, carrier performance, and in-transit shipments — enabling proactive exception management and data-driven decisions for the distribution operations team.
Scope
In scope:
- Outbound order fulfilment from DC to customer
- Carrier and 3PL performance visibility
- Distribution KPI reporting
- Exception alerting for delays, capacity issues, and quality events
Out of scope:
- Inbound receiving and putaway
- Production scheduling
- Customer-facing order status (handled by the order management capability)
Architecture Overview
Capability Mapping
| Capability | Role in Blueprint |
|---|---|
| Warehouse Management | Source of physical stock and despatch events |
| Transportation Management | Source of carrier booking, ETA, and proof of delivery events |
| Distribution Planning | Provides planned distribution schedule against which actuals are compared |
| Performance Management & Reporting | Consumes KPI outputs for executive and operational reporting |
Principle Alignment
| Principle | How Applied |
|---|---|
| Loosely Coupled, Highly Cohesive | Control tower reads from systems via events; never writes back to operational systems |
| API-First Design | All source system integrations use documented event and API contracts |
| Observability First | All platform components emit metrics and traces; SLA alerting is configured from day one |
Reference Architecture
This blueprint instantiates the Supply Chain Control Tower reference architecture, scoped to distribution operations.
